Unified Health Services (UHS) is an industry leader in managing the worker's compensation revenue cycle for ambulatory surgery centers. UHS utilizes its expert knowledge and proven “best practice” processes to automate workflow, lower costs, improve cash-flow, and reduce Accounts Receivable (AR) days.  Since its inception, UHS has managed over 1.8 million workers’ compensation patient accounts, 4.9 million billed claims and $5.0 billion in AR for its clients across the country.

AmSurg / UHS Relationship:
In 2017 Amsurg engaged UHS to assist with collecting work comp claims that they have not been able to fully collect on their own.  Claims assigned to UHS are a mix of those with full and partial unpaid balances.  To date, UHS has processed over 1,350 AmSurg work comp claims and returned over $2.1 million to their surgery centers.

Surgical Authorization Solutions

  • UHS handles requests for authorizations for scheduled and stat procedures;
  • UHS acknowledges receipt of requests and updates the ASC continually on status; 
  • UHS obtains written authorizations/denials for procedures and provides:
    • Approved/denied surgical procedures;
    • Accepted ICD-10 codes;
    • Date range of authorization.

Billing Solutions

  • Billing is automated through transmission of 837 charge files to UHS through clearinghouses;
  • UHS retrieves operative reports, itemized bills, implant vendor invoices, medical reports, etc.;
  • UHS bills claims to workers’ compensation payers electronically or by paper, as required.

AR Management Solutions

  • UHS performs collection, analysis, reconciliation, and resolution of outstanding workers’ compensation AR;
  • UHS evaluates payments received against state fee/reimbursement schedules and PPO contracts;
  • UHS submits reconsiderations to payers for additional reimbursement owed;
  • UHS automates cash application with ERA/835 file back to provider for auto-posting of payments.

Other

  • No long term contracts;
  • Service fees are based on collections.

Results
Outcomes are measurable and significant. We significantly increase collection rates, cut accounts receivable, shorten days to collect, and eliminate uncollectable work comp accounts while standardizing, automating, and coordinating workflow.  Most clients realize 5-10 percentage point gains in collections, an average 27% reduction in A/R, and 90+% reductions in unpaid accounts.  Our goal is >85% of the expected payments within 90 days of the bill date.
